About Munger

The city of Munger situated in the state of Bihar is cherished as a historical place. The city of Munger along with Jamalpur is a twin city situated on the southern banks of the river Ganges. Munger city is the administrative headquarters of the Munger district in the southern part of the Indian state of Bihar.
One of the oldest and fourth largest city of Bihar Munger is situated 180 km east of the capital of Patna and 60 km west of Bhagalpur. Munger is closely associated with revolutionary activities in the national freedom struggle. The city has witnessed many major battles and is famous for the production of weapons like rifles and swords. Munger is known for ancient “seat of rule” and is home to the famous learning center “Bihar School of Yoga” in the world of yoga.

Brief History of Munger

The history of Munger dates back to the period of Ramayana and Mahabharatha. Munger famously known as Monghyr was part of Madhyadesha as “midland” of Aryan settlers. Munger is associated with a place called Mod-Giri mentioned in Mahabharata. Also in the Digvijaya parva, a place called Moda-Giri is mentioned which is very similar to Mod-Giri. It is known that Munger was part of the Kingdom of Anga with its capital at Champa near Bhagalpur.

Later it was known in the sixth century BC, the king of Anga was defeated by Bimbisara of Magadha. There is also evidence that Munger was under the rule of the Guptas. The city gained prominence during medieval period when Mir Kasim shifted his capital from Mushidabad to Munger. This happened in 1762. With this arsenal for manufacturing fire arms in the city was established. There after manufacturing of fire arms in Munger has continued till date. When Mir Kasim lost the Battle of Buxar, Munger came under the British Empire and was ruled by them until India gained independence in 1947.

The administrative headquarters of Munger district is the city of Munger. The whole district of Munger is divided into three sub divisions. The sub divisions are Munger Sadar, Kharagpur and Tarapur. The district collector is at the top level of the hierarchy. The sub divisions are headed by the sub-divisional magistrates. There are nine developmental blocks in the district of Munger. They are Jamalpur, Dharahara, Munger, Sangrampur, Tetia Bambar, Kharagpur, Tarapur, Asarganj and Bariapur. The block development officer heads the block level administration. The police department also plays an important role in maintaining law and order throughout the district of Munger.

Munger is also home to India’s oldest tobacco manufacturing unit which was established by the Britishers and later taken over by ITC Limited.
